Vocal Masterclass with Stéphane SÉNÉCHAL
11 Juillet 2025, salle Cortot - 10am to 5.30pm
After completing a university education in Social Sciences (Master’s degree in Geography / Political Science, Bordeaux) and then attending the Doctoral School of Geopolitics at Paris 8 (Yves Lacoste), Stéphane Sénéchal studied theater at the Cours Florent, honed his skills in piano, singing, and lyrical culture at the Conservatoire à Rayonnement Régional de Bordeaux (under Roland Mancini’s class). He was a student of Paulette Simard, Jocelyne Taillon, Mady Mesplé, Gabriel Bacquier, and Camille Maurane. However, it was his encounter with tenor Michel Sénéchal—who introduced him to Régine Crespin and Montserrat Caballé—that solidified his vocation as a lyrical artist.
A scholarship recipient of the Cercle International Richard Wagner in 2002, he performed a recital in Bayreuth and quickly won numerous awards in international singing competitions, including:
First Prize at the European Competition for Young Soloists in Luxembourg (2002),
First Prize at the International Singing Competition of Vivonne (2004),
First Prize in Opera, Operetta, and the Audience Award at the Friends of the Grand Théâtre de Bordeaux Competition (2005),
Fauré Prize at the International French Melody Competition in Toulouse (2007), Elly Ameling Prize at the Francis Poulenc Competition in New York (May 2013).
Pierre Jourdan, then director of the Théâtre Impérial de Compiègne, offered him several roles in his productions: Les Caprices de Marianne by Henri Sauguet (role of Cœlio), Haydée ou le Secret by Daniel-François-Esprit Auber (role of Domenico), Djamileh and L’Arlésienne by Georges Bizet, Charles VI by Jacques-Fromental Halévy.
He also played the lead role in Quoi de neuf Monsieur Mozart? at the Théâtre National de l’Opéra-Comique in Paris. Additionally, he performed as Oronte in Alcina by Georg Friedrich Haendel (Aix-en-Provence production directed by Jean-Christophe Spinosi), Ottavio in Mozart’s Don Giovanni, Belmonte in The Abduction from the Seraglio, Fenton in Falstaff, and Oronte in I Lombardi by Verdi (International Festivals of Erfurt, Saint-Céré, etc.). He has also played leading roles such as Zéphoris in Si j’étais Roi by Adolphe Adam at the Odéon de Marseille, Nadir (The Pearl Fishers), and Gérald (Lakmé) in numerous international productions across Europe, including the Sofia Opera House and the Paphos Festival (September 2009).

In 2008, during his performance as Florestan in Un mari à la porte by Jacques Offenbach—an operetta performed with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of Vasily Petrenko—a CD was released. In 2012, it received the BBC Grand Prize. At the end of 2013, he recorded an album featuring great arias from the French and Italian repertoire, which was released in early 2014.
He has also participated in the creation of contemporary works, including:
Les Rois by Philippe Fénelon at the Opéra de Bordeaux (2004),
Un Rêve de Carnaval by Thierry Pécou at the Opéra de Reims (2013).
Gaining international recognition for his solidarity gesture, he rose to global fame during the Covid-19 pandemic by singing from his window every day. The international press widely praised his initiative. During this period, he coined the now-viral phrase: “A people who sing is a people who stand tall.”
In 2020, several major media outlets—including CNN, ABC News, World News, AP News, The Star, The San Francisco Chronicle, and Le Parisien—listed him among the most remarkable personalities and photos of the year.
On May 12, 2021, Stéphane Sénéchal was knighted as Chevalier of the Order of Arts and Letters by the French Republic.
